Do it Yourself Application Instructions

Firefighting Made Easy With Fire Shield Products

This is an instructional guide to help make the flame retardant treatment process easier and to help answer questions for anyone new to the idea.

From start to finish we can break things down into 3 categories: PREPARATION, APPLICATON & CERTIFICATION. This will make sure that your product has been correctly applied and that your project can be genuinely certified.

PREPARATION

Tools You Will Need

  • Sprayer (Air pump sprayer or paint sprayer)
  • Ground cover or plastic sheets
  • Respiration mask
  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Measuring tape
  • Roller or painter's brush

Plan Ahead for Your Project

If the material being treated is movable, place in a clean, dry area to reduce dirt and grim sticking to treatment. If your material is stationary, guard against overspray by placing painter’s plastic sheeting across flooring and any other objects.

Make sure your sprayer is completely cleaned from all previous chemicals or residue before filling with Fire Shield products. Any interaction with other chemicals can cause adverse effects and severely reduce the performance of the flame retardant.

Be sure to READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS for each product as there can be extra precautions to consider in care of your material.

BE CAREFUL OF FABRICS WITH HIGH SHEEN; the application may reduce glossiness.

TEST FOR COLOUR FASTNESS; always pretreat a test sample with any material where color is an issue.

Although Fire Shield products are non-hazardous, airborne particles should be prevented from entering the lungs and eyes; be sure to wear proper protection such as eyewear, gloves and respirator.

If there is any irritation from skin contact, flush with water and soap. If irritation continues, seek medical attention for possible allergies and treatment.

APPLICATION

Below is a guideline that can be used for any Fire Shield solution. Coverage amount and application techniques, while generally the same, may include slight changes due to the material being applied to or other variables.

For outdoor applications, area effect can be significantly reduced to a measure of 135 sq. ft. per gallon. This is due to the amount of foliage concentration within the application area and can only be determined by the applicator.

Application Process

For flame retardant certification, all Fire Shield products are required to use at least two coats minimum on every surface of the article being treated. It is important to pay close attention to the product’s instructions. Be sure to check the product’s label and technical sheet for application rules that apply specifically to that product.

  • Before beginning, mark off an area appropriate to the amount of coverage (per gallon) your flame retardant provides

TIP: If your product covers 200 sq. ft. per gallon, measure the correct area amount and place 1 gallon of flame retardant into your sprayer. Try to use the amount of flame retardant in your sprayer to completely cover your marked area only.

  • After appropriating the right amount of chemical in your sprayer, proceed to apply the chemical to the surface of your area.
  • Holding the tip of your sprayer wand 6 inches from the surface, make smooth and consistent strokes across the entire area.

DO NOT OVERSATURATE your material. To assure the maximum effectiveness of your product and reduce overspray, make sure there is NO PUDDLING.

  • Once you have completed your first sweep of the area, you should end up with half of your product left over.
  • Take a roller brush or paint brush and work the flame retardant into the surface.

TIP: Old dry wood will absorb much faster and can trick the eye into believing there is not enough product applied. In this case, it is important to remember to use the same standard method. Simply stick to smooth even strokes without doubling up.

  • Allow 45 minutes to an hour for drying time before proceeding with a second coat.
  • Apply second coat using the sprayer exactly as before and work in with roller or brush.
  • Allow for curing time (about 24 hours) before testing.

CERTIFICATION

After all the previous steps have been taken, the final task is to get it certified! This is only necessary if your project is under code enforcement, and most likely you have already been informed of what’s required.

  • Fill out the application sheet supplied with your order and be sure to include mailing options.
  • Mail or email your application to our headquarters listed on the form.
  • Once the application is approved you should receive a certificate in the mail or by which ever method you prefer.

All certificates are logged by a reference number and displays the code qualifications for the product used as well as the article treated.
